Certification Renewal Information
Certification is for three years and expires on December 31, regardless of the month in which you attained your initial certification. The Association sends renewal notices to certified nurses six (6) months prior to their renewal application deadline date. Please ensure that the home office has your current mailing and email address. Contact info@ForensicNurses.org or 410-626-7805 to update your contact information.
To renew your SANE-A and/or SANE-P certification, you have two options:
- Take the certification examination. See more about upcoming test dates>> OR
- Obtain continuing education credits.
Taking the Examination
To renew by examination, the candidate must achieve a passing score on the certification examination prior to December 31 of the year in which his or her certification expires. To exercise this option, the candidate must notify the Association's home office of his or her intent to renew by examination, download the current SANE Certification Examination Handbook, and follow the instructions to apply for the examination. For more information, see the Certification Examination Information page.

To renew using the CE option, the candidate must download the current SANE Certification Renewal Handbook and follow the instructions, meet the certification renewal eligibility requirements, and submit the renewal application, including the CE Verification Log, by September 15 in the year in which his or her certification expires. The 2014 SANE Certification Renewal Handbook is forthcoming, and includes all the information you need, including a fillable PDF application.
- Contact hours for certification renewal must be obtained during the three (3) -year certification period.
- Contact hours received prior to taking the examination or after submitting the renewal application are not accepted.
